Please find the link below to download our Language Tree Staff Handbook.

It is important that you have had a thorough read of this document prior to our induction day at the start of the summer.

The Staff Handbook provides you with all the important information about how we work as a school and what we expect and offer our staff.

Safeguarding at Language Tree

At Language Tree the welfare of our staff and all of our students, whether they are children or adults, is of paramount importance.

During our induction session at the start of the Summer School, we provide a dedicated Safeguarding session to ensure we all understand our roles and responsibilities in this important area.

Prior to our face-to-face session, it is also essential to complete the British Council Level 1 Safeguarding training.

This can be done online, by clicking on the links below:

Both training modules above are the same, so you only need to complete it once.

If you are a Teacher & Activity Leader, please complete the Level 1 Safeguarding for Teachers.

At the end of the test, you need to take a screenshot of the percentage you achieved in the test and send it to Joel: joel@languagetreeschool.com

Teaching: Lesson 1 (9am - 10.30am)

Our morning English lessons are split into two halves.

Lesson 1 runs from 9-10.30am (90 minutes).

If you have younger learners, you may find it useful to divide this 90min lesson into 2 x 45min lessons.

Lesson 1 should use the National Geographic Outcomes textbook  to guide the structure and language focus of the class,

Young Learners classes also have access to the Eyes Open course book (ages 9-11).

You can find out more about the National Geographic Outcomes series of course books here.

During the summer, you will have access to the Teacher Books in the staff room & there are sufficient Student Books for all your students to have a copy in class.

We teach Pre-Intermediate (A2), Intermediate (B1)Upper-Intermediate (B2) and, occassionally, Advanced (C1) classes.

The majority of our teens are B1-B2 level.

Guidance on using textbooks

We welcome teachers to focus on units that appeal to their interests and strengths, as well as what they feel would resonate best with their classes.

One unit should be suitable material for a week of classes, though we support teachers who wish to supplement the course books with additional activities and extensions.

The Teacher Books also provide a great source of inspiration for extensions or alternative ways to use the materials.

You’ll also find some additional materials on the Outcomes website.

Teaching: Lesson 2 (10.30am - 12pm)

Lesson 2 is also 90 minutes (though some of this time may be used for a short comfort break following the first lesson).

Lesson 2 focuses on the language, history & culture linked to Cornwall, England & the UK.

During this lesson, students will engage with interesting topics connected to local/national history & culture with a particular focus on preparing students for upcoming excursions and reviewing previous excursions and activities.

Lesson 2 is also a great time for language games in the classroom! In the staff room, we have a fantastic range of resources to support this 🙂

All students will be provided with a notebook at the start of their course.

For our teenage students and younger learners, the aim should be for learners to create a ‘souvenir’ type-scrapbook during their morning classes which documents their ideas and experiences during their time with us.

To support you with Lesson 2, Katy has created a comprehensive book of sample materials, lesson plans and ideas to support your Lesson 2 classes…

We will go through these materials in more depth during the induction and Joel & Katy will be on hand during the summer to support teachers with ideas, suggestions and materials for lessons where required.
