Our commitment to sustainability at Language Tree

At Language Tree, we believe that international language courses are a special opportunity for groups of people from around the world to share ideas about sustainability, bringing their experiences from around the world into the classroom.

We know that small actions can have a big impact, and we’re constantly working to minimise our environmental footprint while inspiring our students to do the same and learning from them too.

Environmental awareness in the classroom

Sustainability is not just an abstract idea for us — it is embedded in what we study in class and the places we visit around Cornwall.

With places like the Eden Project on our doorstep, environmental education is at the core of Cornish life and identity.

To complement visits to places like the Eden Project, we discuss environmental topics in the classroom, sharing ideas and reflecting on our impact on the world. This creates a learning environment that’s not just about language growth, but about building a better future — together.

Smarter resources, less waste

We make sustainable choices wherever we can in our day-to-day operations:

  • Course Books: Instead of photocopying, students use high-quality course books. We reuse them each season or source second-hand copies to reduce waste.

  • Recycled Paper: All the paper we use is recycled and responsibly sourced.

  • Ink Recycling: We subscribe to HP Instant Ink, where cartridges are returned, refilled, and reused — nothing goes to landfill.

  • Recycling Stations: Clear signage helps students separate waste into paper, card, glass, plastic, and metals.

Sustainable experiences

Sustainability isn’t just in our materials — it’s in our activities too:

  • Coastal Walks: Our students love walking the South West Coast Path with us, it is the UK’s longest national trail and helps us connect with nature in the most simple way.

  • Eco Attractions: We visit world-class locations like the Eden Project, a beacon of environmental education in Cornwall.

  • Campus Life: The Penryn Campus itself is committed to rewilding, green transport, and reducing waste — values we share.

  • Beach Guardian: We proudly support this brilliant Cornish charity through joining their community beach cleans, helping to learn about and tackle marine plastic pollution.
